István Kozmács obtained his Dr. univ. degree in 1992 and his PhD in 2004 at the University of Szeged, and he habilitated in 2011. His linguistic research focuses primarily on the Udmurt language. The topic of his PhD dissertation, which was also published as a monograph, focused on the morphosyntactics in Udmurt. Another key aspect of his research is the history of Finno-Ugric studies: he analyzed the life and work of Bernát Munkácsi in two monographs, one of which was also published in English. His habilitation was also related to this field. His work as a translator is noteworthy; he has translated both Finnish and Udmurt literary works into Hungarian and was also the creator of a Hungarian literary anthology published in Udmurtia. His teaching career has been diverse: in addition to his work as a lecturer in Uralic studies, for decades, he worked in teacher training and, from 2005 he has been a visiting professor at the Hungarian Institute of the University in Nitra, Slovakia.
